VIJAYA  SIVA - April 10, 2004
Sriram Kumar - Violin

J.Vaidyanathan - Mridangam.

Vijaya Siva’s Vocal concert in Tampa on April 10 ,2004 ,with R.K. Sriramkumar on the violin and J. Vaidyanathan on the mridangam provided soulful and satisfying music. Vijay Siva started the concert with “Sri Nathathi Guru Guho Jayathi Jayathi” a Muthuswami Dikshatar compositionbelieved to be the first krithi composed by him soon after receiving the blessings of Lord Subramania at Tiruttani. Immediately following this three Thyagaraja compositions ,“ Elara Krishna”, “Siva Siva Enaradha” and “Nannukanna Thalli Nabhagyama” in Kambodhi,Pantuvarali, and Sindu Kanada ( also known as Kesari) respectively, were rendered. The next item was the Syama Sastri krithi, “Karunanidhi Ilalo”, in Thodi, with a sumptuous raga elaboration and swara prasthara touching the graceful notes of the raga. The tamil composition of Muthu Thandavar “Kanamal Veenil Kalam Kazithome” in Nilambari was very melodious. “Evarura Ninnuvina” in Mohanam, with a majestic raga alapana and punching swaraprasthara was a tour-de-force. The turn for Thaniavartanam was at this point. Then the Syama Sastri kriti“Mayamma”in Ahiri was rendered ,with eduppu from the anupallavi and the rendering reflected the deep emotional content of the song. This is the only Sowkakala piece of the concert.

For RTP,Vijay Siva took up Keeravani. Both the raga elaboration and thanam were crisp and delightful. The Pallavi “ Shanmuganai, Muruganai, Guhanai, Ninai, Karunaipurium,Pazani, Shanmuganai”held the listners under a spell,in its cyclic pattern and the laya viniyoga. Here, the theermanam strokes of Vaidyanathan added luster to the whole presentation. The niraval in the three speeds and the swara elaborations were delightful.

In the post RTP period there was a tamil viruttam starting in Behag and culminating in “Asaimugam Marandu Pochche” of Bharatiar in Jonpuri. Following this the javali“Marubari” in kamas and Purandaradasa’s “Iekonna namma Swami”in Manirangu were pleasingly rendered. Responding to listner’s requests Vijay Siva delivered five more pieces, including a Thillana in Bilahari and “Villai Muritha”,a Rama nataka piece and two songs from Thruppugaz, all of them rendered very artfully and full of bhavam. In all 17 songs were rendered over 3 hours.

In the ragas and swaraprastharas Sriramkumar responded with mastery and superb control of the violin and gave brilliant support to the concert. Likewise, Vaidyanathan did his part very well.
Vijay Siva has a large rap-por-teur and his meticulous attention to Sahitya are notable features. The Tampa audience felt that the concert was an outstanding and memorable one.
